Это самый слабый результат клуба на этой стадии за 17 лет. Последний раз он опускался так низко в сезоне-2001/02, когда занимал в таблице 11-е место. Теперь у разбитого корыта. В сборную, после такого скандала, понятное дело обратно не возьмут. Лопетеги согласился возглавить "Реал" в июне и подписал трехлетний контракт, что стало причиной громкого скандала. Из-за договоренности с мадридцами специалист потерял пост в сборной Испании за день до старта чемпионата мира-2018. В мае перед поездкой в Россию тренер продлил контракт с Королевской федерацией футбола Испании до 2020 года, но уже через месяц решил перейти в "Королевский клуб" – это должно было случиться после ЧМ.
