Ivan_N
HISTORY BECKONS FOR SCHUMACHER Last Updated: Saturday, 11 October , 2003, 15:04 The most successful man in F1 history stands on the brink of an achievement that would be the crowning glory of even his incredible career. By 8.30am on Sunday morning, we will know whether Michael Schumacher has been crowned Formula 1’s first ever six-time world champion. Juan Manuel Fangio’s tally of five world titles is one of the longest-standing records in modern sport. But it could be about to fall. Schumacher may only have qualified 14th for Sunday’s Suzuka finale (Sunday 6am on ITV1) – but the German is now within touching distance of setting a new benchmark. That’s because Kimi Raikkonen must drive the race of his life to win the race from eighth on the grid. It’s a tall order, especially for someone who, after all, is still only 23 years old. When he realised during qualifying that Schumacher would be behind him on the grid, Raikkonen may have afforded himself a grin. And who can blame him for grasping at a crumb of comfort after a day on which his title aspirations were put throught the wringer? But when he sits down and analyses the day’s events, Raikkonen will have to confront the hard fact that Schumacher’s fate will be incidental unless the Finn wins the race. And with a Ferrari, a Williams and a Renault all in front of him, that’s easier said than done. By contrast, much lighter traffic separates Schumacher from the single point that would seal the title – including a pair of Ferrari-powered Saubers. All this on a track where Schumacher is simply untouchable. 14th on the grid may be Schumacher’s weakest qualifying performance in eight years but remember what happened the last time he started so far down the field? It was Belgium 1995 and he went on to win the race with one of the finest displays of his career. Raikkonen’s best hope remains a retirement for Schumacher – but even then he will have his work cut out beating the other Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari have suffered only one double DNF in four years – so there is little point in clinging to such a wish. If Raikkonen can overturn the odds stacked against him, it will be one of the most amazing turnarounds in F1 history. This season has demonstrated that he certainly has the character - so can he pull off the seemingly impossible? By whatever standards you judge it, this race has all the makings of a classic - and we haven’t even mentioned the beautifully-poised situation in the constructors’ championship. It could be an occasion to tell your grandchildren about. Don’t miss it.

moor
2Neud: В следующий раз, когда будешь открывать подобные темы, давай хотя бы в двух словах общий смысл того, что пишешь, по-русски. Если, конечно, сам его понимаешь. Тема закрыта.
